Brook Place, Sheffield: Apartment Signage
Brief: Apartment Signage Design
Client: Grainger
Sector: Residential
Brook Place is a 237 home, build to rent apartment building close to Sheffield’s city centre. Arranged over 9 floors, residents benefit from a range of amenities including a gym, shared work space, lounge and a roof top terrace. The architectural design, with its Corten façade, celebrates the city’s industrial heritage and creates a distinctive landmark.
Research shows that there is a direct correlation between a customer’s length of tenure and the number of other residents they know in the building. The amenities provide opportunities for residents to meet and get to know each other. So, as well as welcoming prospective and new customers, the wayfinding needs to encourage residents to use these facilities.
The brief was to create a kit of parts that could be used for future roll outs and so deliver a consistent quality across the portfolio.
The challenge was to design a system that would be recognisably Grainger, but could be tailored to suit each particular building.
Taking the half-mast Grainger logo as the inspiration, the index, directional prompt and facility identification signs are all trapezium shaped. These signs are made from a Corten laminate, or feature the laminate as an embellishment on stainless steel – providing a direct connection with the architecture. Elsewhere there are large satin stainless-steel floor identification numbers in the lift lobbies and stairwells. A large Brook Place identity sign is featured within the reception to confirm arrival and welcome visitors.
