Celebrating 15 Years of The Velvet Principle

In May 2025 The Velvet Principle celebrate its 15th birthday. Leaving the comfort of paid employment to go it alone is probably one of the scariest and most rewarding things both founders have ever done. None of it would have been possible without the amazing clients and people we've had the great privilege to work with along the way. We heartily thank you for all your support and for putting your trust in us.

May 2025 sees The Velvet Principle’s celebrate our 15th birthday … that’s fifteen years of delivering wayfinding consultancy projects across the UK and beyond. Setting up a new business in 2010, just as the UK was emerging from a global financial crisis was not the most auspicious time to go it alone. We’ve learnt a lot and we’d be lying if we said there haven’t been a few tricky moments along the way, but then we didn’t think it would be easy. 

Knowing what we know now would we have decided to leave the comfort of paid employment 15 years ago? … Absolutely! We’ve been very fortunate to work with some lovely clients on great projects across the UK as well as internationally. Giving us the opportunity to get to know places, we might not otherwise have had the chance to visit. Yes there have been a few long days and sleepless nights, but somehow putting in the extra hours doesn’t feel so bad when it’s your own business.

Central to everything is the trust clients have put in us to deliver their projects. It’s a responsiblity we’ve never taken lightly throughout our fifteen year journey. To all those we’ve worked with and supported us through the years – thank you. We could never and done it without you!

June 2020 marked The Velvet Principle’s 10th anniversary. When we started developing plans for celebrating this milestone late last year, little did we imagine that our birthday would fall during a worldwide pandemic.  Any ideas of a party to mark the occasion were swiftly kicked into touch.

However lockdown has given us time to reflect on what a great journey it’s been so far and think about how we want to evolve and develop over the next ten.

We would be nothing without our clients who’ve given us the opportunity to work on some great projects. We’ve been fortunate to  work with some of the most talented and inspiring teams within the property sector;  get to know places we may never have visited otherwise – Azerbaijan, Oman, Moscow to name but a few; and met some damn fine people in the process. A heartfelt thanks to you all for your faith and confidence in us – we never take it for granted. 

Who knows what the future may hold? Or the extent to which the legacy of Covid-19 will shape our lives and priorities, even once a successful vaccine becomes readily available. Against this background of uncertainty, we’re clear that sustainability and inclusivity principles will be at the heart of The Velvet Principle’s business and design practice. 

With change comes the opportunity to think and do things differently. Ten years ago, striking out on our own to to set up a new business, felt like a huge leap into the unknown. As we embark on the next 10 it seems little has changed.
