Fire Safety Regulation Compliant Wayfinding Signage Designed for Phoenix Community Housing

The Velvet Principle was appointed by Phoenix Community Housing to update the wayfinding signage across five of its high-rise apartment buildings. The main objective was to ensure compliance with the latest fire safety regulations. But it also provided an opportunity to implement a new brand identity and introduce a uniform design across the estate.

Phoenix Community Housing is a not-for-profit, resident-led housing association providing just under 8,000 homes within South London.  After carrying out an audit cataloguing the existing signage, The Velvet Principle developed an updated sign location plan and schedule for removal of legacy signs.

When it came to the design of the signs, Phoenix was looking for a pragmatic cost-effective solution that could be applied across the estate. The design needed to be suitable for application across different range of surfaces and interior features. A series of design options were created and presented to the resident’s management board and a final design agreed.
